Fears and Phobias
The main difference between a fear and phobia is one of degree of response. We are all born with natural fears of falling and loud noises. We learn other fears very quickly and some of them are quite rational – walking at night in a dangerous part of town for example! But some we know are not so rational. Many people have irritating, but nonetheless inconvenient fears which they may feel silly about – small spiders perhaps! It may also be that there is something that is holding you back from achieving a goal, such as fearing exams and the need to overcome nerves.
A phobia is an irrational fear driven by emotion that may impact on the way we live our lives. Understanding why we have it doesn’t actually help in most cases. A phobia can affect anyone and at any age. However, as quick as it has been to ‘learn’ to have the phobia, we can almost as quickly get rid of it. NLP is a most effective technique in over-coming fears and phobias. You will feel liberated and able to get on with your life again and do things that before you may have been prevented from doing.
Please note that panic attacks in social situations are not a phobia as such and usually require more extensive treatment.
